chapter four

That night I slept like a baby and I woke to the unique smell of maple syrup. Nutmeg greeted me with purrs of happiness. “Good morning, Nutmeg. How did you sleep last night?” She always slept down by my feet and cuddled up close to me. She answered by coming up and rubbing her head under my chin. “Okay, let me get up.”

I stretched and went to the kitchen to get my coffee started and to give Nutmeg a cat treat. I gave her one and she ate it then looked up at me wanting another. “You want more? Meow for me, please?” She looked from the treat container to my hand and meowed at me. “Good girl.” I gave her two more and went to fix my coffee. I added some maple syrup for my sweetener this morning. I had a thought so I sat in my chair and grabbed my go to recipe box. It was huge and I had everything arranged in alphabetical order.

“What to make, hmm... Maple cookies with maple frosting that is a must, along with maple cake and fluffy maple frosting. Doesn’t that sound good, kitty?”

Nutmeg answered with a meow. I continued to sort through my recipe box. I remembered I had a bunch of little maple leaf molds so I decided on maple syrup candies. I would get working on them as soon as I had my shower. The coffee for the day was going to be maple flavored, of course. I had the whole day to get some things made and then I wouldn’t have to get started so early Monday morning. Everything would be taken care of.

Nutmeg jumped onto my lap and settled down. But now that I was on her schedule she would not give up my lap easily, so I enjoyed my coffee and relaxed with her.

After a while, Nutmeg jumped down and I started my day. I had my kitchen totally remodeled to look like the kitchen at the shop. Everything was industrial so I could cook a lot at once. But, I also did wedding cakes and I had the room here to make the cake, and the frosting.

I started with the candies. They could be a pain in the butt to do because the maple syrup had to come to a boil than you had to mix it, pour it, and let it harden in their molds. I moved on to making tiny apple pies by lining the crust into muffin tins then adding the filling. They turned out perfect and looked so cute. My house smelled heavenly. I should have gone to the Lair but I was in my comfy cozy red plaid lounge pants and fluffy slippers.

Luckily, I had several boxes and the little containers that I could put my candies in. The coffee and the sweet smell of the syrup made my mouth water. I had spent the day sampling everything I had made when the doorbell rang.

“I wonder who that is?” I looked at Nutmeg, waiting for her to answer with her customary meow.
